Forschungszentrum Jülich (Jülich Research Center)
The Jülich Research Center is one of the largest scientific facility in Europe with its 1,300 scientist (including 400 Ph. D. students and scholarship holders). It is a flagship institute for cooperation between industry and universities. Research is focused on biotechnology, bio- and nanosystems, solid state bodies and energy systems.

Fraunhofer Institut für Molekularbiologie und Angewandte Ökologie (IME), Aachen (Fraunhofer Institute Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology, Aachen)
The IME focuses on the fields of applied life sciences ranging from the molecule to the ecosystem. R&D activities are concentrated on the areas of diagnosis and therapy of human, plant and animal diseases as well as protection and improvement of agricultural crop and food products.

These centers offer an innovative environment to start-up-enterprises, where they can develop and realize their ideas. 22 technology- and start-up-centers, with at least one enterprise working on the fields of chemistry, life science, biotechnology or new material are located in the ChemCologne-Region.
