The ChemCologne region, as well as the federal state North Rhine-Westphalia, is characterized by a huge number of networks and clusters. The thematic focus and the regional coverage of the networks and clusters are different from each other. For example in the field of plastics, a statewide network kunststoffland.NRW exists, as well as regional networks in Oberbergisches Land or Aachen, which are also focused on plastics.

The federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia has decided to strengthen and to develop 16 leading industry sectors with its excellence-initiative "ExzellenzNRW". The goal of this initiative is to make the state of North Rhine-Westphalia the no. 1 in strategic fields for the future, by a commitment of the partners from economy, research, innovation, and politics. The clusters Chemie.NRW, Bio.NRW, EnergieRegion.NRW, NMW.NRW, Kunststoff.NRW, as well as Umwelttechnologien.NRW have a particular relevance for the chemical industry.

For the newly-settled enterprises the above mentioned networks and clusters are an option to link themselves to partners from the fields of research and development, manufacturers, and processing industry.
